Upon entering 7th grade, it is expected that students will have read throughout the summer. In seventh grade, we want to continue to foster students’ love of reading. In the summer, students will have the opportunity to choose from the selected book lists to better prepare them for 7th grade books in the genre of Historical Fiction. It is essential students pick a book they have not read before. The suggested books are at a variety of levels and topics, therefore it is important that parents/guardians approve the book that the student has chosen to read. Every parent has a different barometer of what is appropriate for their student. Please utilize Common Sense Media to determine if the book selection is an appropriate choice for your child.
Students will be responsible for completing a culminating activity the first two weeks of school related to the book they read over the summer. Additionally, students are required to complete a graphic organizer (included below) for each novel while he/she reads the text.
Students may select a book to read that is not found on the list below. It is still strongly recommended that the book students select remain within the genre of focus as indicated (Historical Fiction). If parents/guardians have questions about summer reading or need assistance in selecting an alternative text, please contact Kara Douma, Supervisor of English Language Arts at (973) 292-2000, ext. 2282 or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
